A Naming Ceremony is a wonderful celebration of welcome for a new member of the family. The giving of a name is an important rite in a society. It is a completion of the birthing process and a recognition of a new stage in the life of your family. It is sharing with those closest to us, and it is the occasion when we formalise the chosen names. A Naming Ceremony gives you, as parents, an opportunity to make promises to your child and to acknowledge the people who will play an important role, such as siblings, grandparents or friends. It is also an opportunity to appoint guardians or godparents. When the names are officially bestowed upon the child or children, there may be an explanation given on the reasons for selecting the chosen names, or a particular meaning attributed to the names. There are many lovely rituals which can be chosen, with opportunity for participation from family and friends. A naming ceremony can be held at any time, and is also a lovely way to commemorate a first birthday or other significant time. As Covid lockdowns have impacted, many families have chosen this option to celebrate their child's arrival. You will be presented with a naming certificate to mark the occasion. Eileen Dunstone, JP
