How soon can we get married?
You will need to complete a Notice of Intended Marriage and sign and lodge it with a celebrant at least one month before you intend to marry. This notice is valid for 18 months. It is always best to get this notice completed early and confirm your booking with the celebrant of your choice to ensure he/she is available on the date. It is preferable for your celebrant to fill in this form with you. You can download it here (PDF)
A prescribed authority may approve a shorter notice time in some limited circumstances.
What documentation do we need to get married in Australia?
A Notice of Intended Marriage Form must be lodged with a celebrant a minimum time of one month prior to the ceremony date and is valid for up to 18 months. You will need to satisfy identity requirements, so will need to produce a birth certificate or a passport, plus photo ID. You will also need proof of termination of any previous marriage.
Before your marriage, you will sign a Declaration of No Impediment to Marriage, which indicates that you are free to be married. As I generally conduct a rehearsal on site, this is an appropriate time to sign this Declaration.
After the ceremony you will be required to sign three documents (Marriage Register, commemorative Certificate of Marriage and Official Certificate of Marriage) before your chosen two witnesses. After the wedding, the documentation is then sent to Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages in the State/Territory where the ceremony took place. After you receive notice that your marriage has been registered, you may then apply online for your registered Certificate of Marriage. This is the document you will need when an official certificate is required
Who can be witnesses?
There must be two witnesses over the age of 18. They must be within hearing distance of the vows and will sign your three documents.
What documents do I need to complete a Notice of Intended Marriage Form?
Prior to the day of your marriage, both partners need to provide personal photographic identification, an original birth certificate OR a current passport. If previously married evidence of termination (death or nullity certificate) must be sighted by the celebrant.
Where can we get married?
Anywhere you want to! You can choose any venue which suits you and your guests. There are some wonderful sites both in Canberra and the surrounding areas.
We need a Spouse Visa. What do we do?
Once you have completed a Notice of Intended Marriage form and chosen a date, I can provide you with a letter for a Department of Immigration. However, any questions regarding visas need to be directed to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection. You may wish to consult a migration agent.
Can we write our own vows?
Of course you can. I assist, guide, give you some starting points and make sure they include the legal requirements, but apart from that you can have whatever you want, whether it be traditional, other people's words, your own, or a mixture.
We discuss the outline of your ceremony and what sorts of things you would like in it
